December 2013

November was a decidedly hirsute month, inspiring the growth of beards and moustaches. While there are still two weeks of beard growing left, it's time to become inspired by December, the month of....hmmm...time for a story....My wife and I spent a few Decembers in the Midwest driving sideways down ice clad roads... assuming the car started at all..and we still get a chuckle remembering the stories about the "bitter cold" in Sonoma County when we would call home. I will never forget walking outside from the terminal in San Francisco and being in awe of what I had taken so long for granted....green...the color of coastal California December. So let's get inspired by December, the month of green and thank November for proving once again, not just everyone looks good with facial hair.

Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas: This duo of a fiddler and a celloist  are playing in Sebastopol Dec. 7th and have been described as" felicitous", which beats" pleasing" any day of the week.

Jim Hurst and Bob Ickes: Here I go again...just love bluegrass! By all accounts these two are bluegrass Olympians. In Sebastopol Dec. 13th. Catfish sandwiches unlikely.

Pepperland:  These guys specialize in Beatles tunes. Dec. 14th at the Hopmonk Tavern in Sebastopol on Abbey Road...oops...I mean Petaluma Avenue.

Poetry Slam: That's what happens to the door when I read original work...but not at Hopmonk Tavern. This is kind of uniquely Sebastopol, which is to say...interesting. December 8th. Winners get a belt buckle with a bust of Longfellow.

The California Honeydrops: Dec. 5th at the Hopmonk Tavern in Sebastopol. Do yourself a favor and check out their video in the link. I was moonwalking just listening to these guys...awesome!

Teresa Tudury: Saturday Dec. 21st at the Occidental Performing Arts Center. This lady sounds very entertaining!

December 16th Christmas Caroling at the Union Hotel: This is just the best event ever. The Union Hotel is decked out for Christmas, and the Gonella family have made THOUSANDS of cookies, hot cider, etc. If my kids were out of school I would be up there for sure.

December 5th Sebastopol Celebration in the Plaza: Rain or shine! 5-8pm with things to eat, crafts, live entertainment!

Sonoma County Calendar of Events: Peruse this site for the big picture of events in December.

Joseph Phelps Vineyard in Freestone is hosting a wine event December 8th from 12-4 PM featuring, among other things, a "kiss of caviar".

Dutton Vineyard is hosting a wine event on the weekend of December 14th/15th celebrating Pinot Noir which is a varietal that likes the cooler climate of west Sonoma County.

Occidental Winter Choir: performing Dec. 6-7 and Dec. 13-14 at the Occidental Center for the Arts.

Cool Yule!: Dec. 8th at the Occidental Center for the Arts. Gypsy Jazz in the spirit of Christmas!

Do You Wake Up Feeling Crabby? You're in luck! It's Dungeness crab season! Take a drive out to the Tides Wharf for a crab feed, you'll feel better.

December 21st: Happy winter solstice! My hands down favorite pagan holiday. First official day of winter and the days are now getting longer. Now if we can just get some rain!! Longest night of the year!
