April 2014

I think everyone on the west coast will agree that April is indeed spring time. What that means in West Sonoma county is that the apple blossoms will be in full bloom toward the middle of April, the vineyards will begin to leaf out, wildflowers will begin to bloom in earnest, and of course the wild grasses and plants collectively known as weeds will be begging for attention. It's a great time of year to hike and bike and explore and maybe even log a little hammock time although that for sure begins in May. Let's see what's going on:

Update 3/5/2014: Remember folks, it's Sebastopol California Redwood House not to be confused with the sea port in the Crimean Penninsula from which the town of Sebastopol was named. So fear not, we are not under siege by Russians in spite of our proximity to the Russian River.

Update: 3/22/2014: Just got back from a few days at the house. My wife and I went to Lynmar Estates just outside of Graton. This is a very aesthetic venue for tasting a few wines and walking around their beautiful gardens
so I highly recommend it. Check out my local attractions page. Also, the Laguna de Santa Rosa is full of water now and quite beautiful. With more rain coming it should stay full for a while. Consider the Laguna Trail hike. Biked out Willow creek a few times. The Creek is full of water now. Consider a hike or bike out Willow Creek Road. Also added an 8 inch diameter shower head.

Update 4/4/2014: The house saw a lot of rain in March. The creek is full, the forget-me-nots are up, the hills are green and we are looking good for a very pretty spring. That translates to excellent walks on the Joe Redota Trail and stellar hikes listed on my things to do page.

Update 4/17: Super pretty right now. The new sofa bed pic is here.
This pic was taken four weeks ago but looks about the same today.

Occidental Video Rental:
Added a DVD player last month.

Movies in Sebastopol:

Hopmonk Tavern in Sebastopol: Here is the April line up.

Dutton Winery: Here is there line up of events.

Bodega Bay Fishermans Festival: April 26-27; This is a great event. If you are in the area on these dates consider incorporating this into the loop drive discussed on my "things to do" page.

Freestone: April 13th wine and cheese pairing at Joseph Phelps winery. Hey, any excuse to drive over to Freestone is a good one.

April 5th in Occidental: April fools day parade. Feeling foolish? Want to commune with other foolish people? Here's your chance!

April 11th: Sebastopol Community Center: Celtic Fiddle Festival. This group sounds really good.

April 26th: Greg Brown: Sebastopol Community Center: This performer has quite this list of big name performers who have embraced his songs.

April 26th: Occidental Center for the Arts
: Click on this link...this group looks like a total winner!!

April 12th: Occidental Center for the Arts: The real vocal string quartet. These ladies have broken free from their classical training for what sounds like a very entertaining performance.

Will continue to scout it out!

March 2014

March is spring in Sonoma County. The vineyards are blooming with yellow mustard flowers, the wild iris are in bloom, and the grass in a normal year would be tall and wavy but this year probably short and wavy. Some flowering trees will be in bloom but the apple trees won't bloom until April. Trees in general won't leaf out in March but you may see the willows along the creeks begin to leaf out toward the end of March. The coast tends to be a bit windy in the spring months so jackets are a must. Basically it's just another fabulous month to get out there and see what's happening in the countryside. So let's go!

Update: 3/22/2014: The apple blossoms are already coming out in some areas. As I mentioned in my April section, Lynmar Estates in Graton is looking really good right now. The umbrellas are out on the Patio, the gardens are perking up, and there is a beautiful view of the very full Laguna de Santa Rosa to the east. Check out the April blog for timely ideas about things to do. J

March 14th; Claire Lynch Band at the Occidental Center for the Arts. Just say "bluegrass diva" and I'm there. And that's what they said! This sounds like a total winner.

March 8th  8 PM Occidental Center for the arts: Miro Quartet.  This group was SOLD OUT AT CARNEGIE HALL! Not sure how Occidental scored this gig but these guys are the real deal and this concert would make a great addition to dinner out in Occidental.

Hopmonk Tavern, Sebastopol: Check out their line up for March.

March 8th: Sonoma County Bluegrass Festival in Sebastopol: Sorry, I'm just hooked on this music. If you are pickin' fool, head down to this event and see what's shakin'.

Sebastopol Community Cultural Center: Here's the March line up of events.

March 9th Freestone: Pair Cab and Gumbo in Freestone. I really love Freestone and any excuse to go there is welcome. Check out the town on my local attractions page.

Just a reminder: Occidental farmers market every Friday. Great intro to Occidental if you haven't been there.

March 16th: Kirk Whipple and Marilyn Morales at the Occidental Center for the Arts; This sounds like a quality evening of good humor and excellent piano.

March 22nd at Occidental Center for the Arts: A group named Janam  . Their genre spans Eastern exoticism and gritty Appalachian folk melodies...now that's a musical spectrum! This really does sound like an interesting group and a good fit for Occidental. Bet it fills up.

Bodega Bay Marine Lab: Most Fridays 2-4PM you can partake in a drop in tour. This place is usually locked up and the cove and surroundings are beautiful so this is a chance to see part of Bodega Head that is inaccessible and learn something about marine animals like Crusty Crab, Plankton, Sponge Bob....

This is Cheesy: If you happen to be passing through Petaluma on 3/21 on your way north, consider stopping in for a cheese break as the cheese festival is happening. Hey, you need something to go with your wine that evening!

More later!
