Happy New Year! The winter solstice is behind us and the minutes of added daylight are sublime! My years in the Midwest taught me that there are no "bad" months in California. Usually in January there are a couple of weeks of pristine clear weather. February on the other hand is rainy for sure, which is why the Amgen tour has been a typically rainy event. Hiking or running in January can be exciting with creeks and rivers full of water and the hillsides green with new grass. Check out my "things to do" page as there are several hikes there that are great year-round. January hiking=solitude.

Update: 12/29/2013. Just got back from a six day stay at the house and the weather was strangely warm! The hills are dry which is very unusual for this time of year. A bit of frost on the roof every morning which I could see while I was sipping my coffee in the hot tub. I can't honestly say that I dont have a favorite time of year up there as every season has something special to offer. My family hiked around the old grove of trees mentioned on my "things to do page". Rain or shine, the old grove is a must do. I have seen quite a few huge redwoods, but I was still in awe of the sheer number of truly gigantic redwoods in that grove. We drove the loop that I suggest on this site including a hike on the Kortum trail and had a fabulous time. My youngest son and I biked Willow Creek road a few times and had a great time with truly world class views. Once again, California delivers in the winter!

Hopmonk strikes again: Here is the latest line up at Hopmonk Tavern in Sebastopol. I will update it as more gigs add.

Tides Wharf Crab Feed: January 10th at Bodega Bay. Could be absolutely beautiful out there! Go on a hike, end the day at the wharf!

January 18-19: Drive through the countryside on a Sonoma County winery tour all mapped out and organized for you. If you want to hire a designated driver who will drive your car, click here. They will show up at the house and take you back to the house in your car. They'll even let you sit in back and pretend it's a limo.

Bach to the future is a chamber music ensemble playing January 18  in Occidental 8-10 pm. At $30/ticket, you won't go baroque.

David Lindley: January 17th in Sebastopol. He is a stringed instrument virtuoso.

Petty Theft: January 3rd at the Hopmonk in Sebastopol. They say that imitation is the ultimate form of flattery so outright identity theft must be even better. By all accounts these guys sound like Tom Petty et. al.

Kingsborough: January 11th at Hopmonk in Sebastopol. Sounds like this band is hot in the Bay Area. Rock On!

Pat Jordan Band: January 17th at Hopmonk Sebastopol. This is a band with a work ethic. Read the review, they sound great!

Sean Hayes: January 18th at Hopmonk. Sounds mellow.

Pato Banyon; Raggae master. January 31 at Hopmonk. Sounds soulful.

Wine Tasting Page: Check it out and look at the Russian River Valley wineries as those will be closest to the house.

January 25th is Chowder Day: And I bet you didn't even know it! If it's cold and clammy, warm yourself up with a bowl of chowder while gazing onto the pacific.

A Whale of a Good Time: Binoculars, down jackets, picnic basket, Sonoma coastline. There, a recipe for a good time.

Life is good in coastal California!!

December 2013

November was a decidedly hirsute month, inspiring the growth of beards and moustaches. While there are still two weeks of beard growing left, it's time to become inspired by December, the month of....hmmm...time for a story....My wife and I spent a few Decembers in the Midwest driving sideways down ice clad roads... assuming the car started at all..and we still get a chuckle remembering the stories about the "bitter cold" in Sonoma County when we would call home. I will never forget walking outside from the terminal in San Francisco and being in awe of what I had taken so long for granted....green...the color of coastal California December. So let's get inspired by December, the month of green and thank November for proving once again, not just everyone looks good with facial hair.

Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas: This duo of a fiddler and a celloist  are playing in Sebastopol Dec. 7th and have been described as" felicitous", which beats" pleasing" any day of the week.

Jim Hurst and Bob Ickes: Here I go again...just love bluegrass! By all accounts these two are bluegrass Olympians. In Sebastopol Dec. 13th. Catfish sandwiches unlikely.

Pepperland:  These guys specialize in Beatles tunes. Dec. 14th at the Hopmonk Tavern in Sebastopol on Abbey Road...oops...I mean Petaluma Avenue.

Poetry Slam: That's what happens to the door when I read original work...but not at Hopmonk Tavern. This is kind of uniquely Sebastopol, which is to say...interesting. December 8th. Winners get a belt buckle with a bust of Longfellow.

The California Honeydrops: Dec. 5th at the Hopmonk Tavern in Sebastopol. Do yourself a favor and check out their video in the link. I was moonwalking just listening to these guys...awesome!

Teresa Tudury: Saturday Dec. 21st at the Occidental Performing Arts Center. This lady sounds very entertaining!

December 16th Christmas Caroling at the Union Hotel: This is just the best event ever. The Union Hotel is decked out for Christmas, and the Gonella family have made THOUSANDS of cookies, hot cider, etc. If my kids were out of school I would be up there for sure.

December 5th Sebastopol Celebration in the Plaza: Rain or shine! 5-8pm with things to eat, crafts, live entertainment!

Sonoma County Calendar of Events: Peruse this site for the big picture of events in December.

Joseph Phelps Vineyard in Freestone is hosting a wine event December 8th from 12-4 PM featuring, among other things, a "kiss of caviar".

Dutton Vineyard is hosting a wine event on the weekend of December 14th/15th celebrating Pinot Noir which is a varietal that likes the cooler climate of west Sonoma County.

Occidental Winter Choir: performing Dec. 6-7 and Dec. 13-14 at the Occidental Center for the Arts.

Cool Yule!: Dec. 8th at the Occidental Center for the Arts. Gypsy Jazz in the spirit of Christmas!

Do You Wake Up Feeling Crabby? You're in luck! It's Dungeness crab season! Take a drive out to the Tides Wharf for a crab feed, you'll feel better.

December 21st: Happy winter solstice! My hands down favorite pagan holiday. First official day of winter and the days are now getting longer. Now if we can just get some rain!! Longest night of the year!
