March 2014

2/7/2014

March is spring in Sonoma County. The vineyards are blooming with yellow mustard flowers, the wild iris are in bloom, and the grass in a normal year would be tall and wavy but this year probably short and wavy. Some flowering trees will be in bloom but the apple trees won't bloom until April. Trees in general won't leaf out in March but you may see the willows along the creeks begin to leaf out toward the end of March. The coast tends to be a bit windy in the spring months so jackets are a must. Basically it's just another fabulous month to get out there and see what's happening in the countryside. So let's go!

Update: 3/22/2014: The apple blossoms are already coming out in some areas. As I mentioned in my April section, Lynmar Estates in Graton is looking really good right now. The umbrellas are out on the Patio, the gardens are perking up, and there is a beautiful view of the very full Laguna de Santa Rosa to the east. Check out the April blog for timely ideas about things to do. J

March 14th; Claire Lynch Band at the Occidental Center for the Arts. Just say "bluegrass diva" and I'm there. And that's what they said! This sounds like a total winner.

March 8th  8 PM Occidental Center for the arts: Miro Quartet.  This group was SOLD OUT AT CARNEGIE HALL! Not sure how Occidental scored this gig but these guys are the real deal and this concert would make a great addition to dinner out in Occidental.

Hopmonk Tavern, Sebastopol: Check out their line up for March.

March 8th: Sonoma County Bluegrass Festival in Sebastopol: Sorry, I'm just hooked on this music. If you are pickin' fool, head down to this event and see what's shakin'.

Sebastopol Community Cultural Center: Here's the March line up of events.

March 9th Freestone: Pair Cab and Gumbo in Freestone. I really love Freestone and any excuse to go there is welcome. Check out the town on my local attractions page.

Just a reminder: Occidental farmers market every Friday. Great intro to Occidental if you haven't been there.

March 16th: Kirk Whipple and Marilyn Morales at the Occidental Center for the Arts; This sounds like a quality evening of good humor and excellent piano.

March 22nd at Occidental Center for the Arts: A group named Janam  . Their genre spans Eastern exoticism and gritty Appalachian folk melodies...now that's a musical spectrum! This really does sound like an interesting group and a good fit for Occidental. Bet it fills up.

Bodega Bay Marine Lab: Most Fridays 2-4PM you can partake in a drop in tour. This place is usually locked up and the cove and surroundings are beautiful so this is a chance to see part of Bodega Head that is inaccessible and learn something about marine animals like Crusty Crab, Plankton, Sponge Bob....

This is Cheesy: If you happen to be passing through Petaluma on 3/21 on your way north, consider stopping in for a cheese break as the cheese festival is happening. Hey, you need something to go with your wine that evening!

More later!
