May 2014

May is another fabulous month in Sonoma County. Unlike areas to the south or east, Sonoma County is green and springlike throughout may. With longer days it's easy to hike/bike until 730 pm or so and there are still plenty of wild flowers around. The evenings are  a bit cool which is a good excuse to fire up the wood stove. On my "things to do" page, swimming the Russian river is still not an option, but hiking and biking and driving around seeing the sights are even better. If you are up for a challenge, a day hike starting at Bullfrog Pond  above Armstrongs Grove into the Austin Creek State Recreational Area would be super pretty in may. Plan on taking all day for that one and feel free to curse me on the way up Panorama grade! Straggle in to the Union Hotel around 7 pm for a huge dinner! Sign me up! You can also mountain bike in there which is even better. I would not recommend this trip in the summer months as it can be quite hot.

Occidental Video Rental: Added a DVD player last month.

Hop Monk Tavern Sebastopol: Here's the line up!

Occidental Center for the Arts: May 2nd: Chris Webster and Nina Gerber. I went to high school with Nina and if I was up there on this date, I would definitely go to this. Nina was a super talent on guitar in high school and she truly rips now. Acoustic blue grass, blues, folk. She is a powerhouse.

Occidental Center for the Arts: May 10th. Jayme Stone and band. He is described as the Yo Yo Ma of the banjo. Sounds like a real talent.

Occidental Center for the Arts: pickPocket ensemble May 17th: Their sound is described as "atmospheric". Hmm. That leaves a lot of room ...

Sebastopol Community Cultural Center:  Here is the May calendar of events.

Mamjowali: May 30th Occidental Center for the arts:
Hey, where else can you dance to a kamale ngoni! These guys look happy...good musicians have that happy look about them. I would go just for the West African hunters harp. Break outta the box!

The English Beat: Hopmonk Tavern May 2-3:
This sounds like a nice evening.

Lagos Roots: Hopmonk Tavern May 10:
Afro world funk in the nuclear free zone. This is Sebastopol all the way! Don't ask me, I'm a hick!

Hopmonk Tavern May 20:
Got funk? Described as "supremely funky", these guys sound like fun. Funk can't be learned...you either got it or you don't. They got it.

May 25th Valley Ford: Oysetrpalooza!: Celebrate the bivalve in Valley Ford. Don't like bivalves? How about music in a beautiful pastoral setting? Either way, you win.

Will add more later!
